The Āḻvārs are 12 poet-saints from South India who reshaped the landscape of Vaiṣṇavism with their deep emphasis on bhakti. Through thousands of verses glorifying the Lord and describing their own loving relationships with Him, they brought to life the idea of a personal relationship with God. These verses are collected in the Nālāyira-divya-prabandham (‘The Four Thousand Divine Hymns’), also known as the Divya-prabandham.
In this course, we will get a taste of the bhakti of the Āḻvārs through short introductions to each Āḻvār, key stories from their lives, and selected excerpts from their verses in the Divya-prabandham. We will also briefly explore the influence they had on the development of Vaiṣṇavism as we know it today.
